What’s Wrong With A Little Fruit Salad?

Want to  about a frightening trend among teenager party goers? Have you ever heard of a Fruit Salad Party?

Sounds pretty innocent, doesn’t it?  If your teenager and their friends are eating some gooey, syrupy peaches, pears and a cherry or two, is there anything wrong with that? No, but do you really what a Fruit Salad Party is?

Teenagers are raiding the parents’ medicine cabinets of prescription drugs, and over the counter drugs, then combining them into a colorful mixture in a bowl. The teens then scoop out a handful of this “fruit salad” and gulp them down, with no idea of what they are swallowing.

What is really frightening is how easy it is for teens to get away with this.  To have a fruit salad party, your teenager does not have to go and buy drugs from a drug dealer.  They don’t have to risk dealing with unsavory characters. They simply go into your medicine cabinet, grab a few pills, and walk out. No one will ever.

Teenagers today are abusing prescription drugs at record levels. Some commentators have even given this generation of teens the nickname “Generation Rx.”

Communication with your teen is the best means of preventing this type of drug use.  Prominently displaying a EZ To Use Drug Test on your refrigerator is an excellent way to start the process of communicating with your son or daughter.    For some basic tips on talking to your teen about drugs, click here.   But, you also need to talk to your teenager specifically about prescription medications.  They need to

•    Prescription Drugs taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision can be just as dangerous as taking illegal drugs or alcohol
•    Painkillers is very much like heroin because their ingredients are similar (both are opiates).
•    Many pills look the same and are easy to get mixed up. It is extremely dangerous to take pills that are unknown.
•    Mixing drugs with other substances is very dangerous. Some people have allergic reactions to different chemicals when they are mixed together.

What can you do to help prevent teens from prescription drug abuse? Besides having a EZ To Use Drug Test, be sure to keep your prescription drugs in a safe, locked place. Don’t leave them in a medicine cabinet where your teenager can easily get to them. And, most importantly, talk to your teen and warn them of the dangers of prescription drugs.
